Derek has lived in Ashford for most of his life and is married to Norma. His working career was spent mainly in the brewing industry as a business economist. He has represented the Ashford South Division as a Labour and Co-operative County Councillor since 1998 and been Deputy Leader of the Kent Labour Group since 2001. He is the Shadow Cabinet Spokesman for Finance.
