Government Grants £2.4 million to Kent for Pothole Repairs
In last weeks budget debate the Government announced a £100 million grant to local authorities to help repair potholes in recognition of the exceptional weather conditions this winter. Kent County Council’s share of this “bonanza” is £2,448,400 provided it is used specifically for repairs to roads caused by the weather. The Government goes on to say that while “ad hoc” patching is possible it recommends that KCC will make repairs that will benefit the road user in the longer term.
At a Cabinet meeting on 29th March KCC agreed to set up an immediate £2million fund for such repairs.
Leslie Christie – Leader of the Labour Group on KCC and County Councillor for Northfleet and Gravesend West said:
“It is great that the Labour Government recognises the problems faced by road users in Kent and is prepared to put its money where its mouth is. It is a pity that KCC does not show the same priority.
The Government are putting more than twice the amount of money into potholes repairs in Kent than the County Council are, and the Government is insisting on long term solutions rather than just throwing a shovelful of bitumen at the hole. I know from my own area in Kent that the temporary repairs that are done don’t last beyond the next shower of rain and I welcome the example being set by the Government”
