Helping to create jobs in Kent

At today’s meeting of Kent County Council, Labour Group Leader Leslie Christie will propose the establishment of a scheme to incentivise employers to increase the number of apprenticeships in the County. The move could mean that the most vulnerable young people have a chance to gain employment and training during uncertain economic times.

Leslie Christie said of his amendment: “I recognise that young vulnerable people in the County need the support of the County Council if they are to enter the jobs market. Young people with learning difficulties often find it harder to gain a job and this amendment will help in some way.”

The proposal would see an increase in the supporting independence budget of £500,000 taken from the now defunct Kent TV meaning that the scheme would have no overall cost to the Council Tax payer.

Leslie Christie added: “Now the Tories have accepted our argument that Kent TV was a waste of money, they can now do something worthwhile and support Kent Labour in helping vulnerable young people in to work. Question is will they use some of the money put aside for Kent TV to help people or will they squander it on some other pet project?”
