KCC PLAYS POLITICS ON POST OFFICESKent Labour condemns KCC’s involvement in a forthcoming ‘Kent Post Office Summit’ as a political stunt. Labour Shadow Leader of KCC Mike Eddy said: “KCC says that it has organised this event with ‘a range of partners’ to look at how it can best support ‘community-led solutions’ in areas affected by post office closures.“We don’t dispute that communities should be supported to make the most of their local facilities and to find the best way to access the postal service. But it seems strange that, if KCC was so concerned about post office closures and the future of rural communities, it didn’t make any input to the House of Commons’ Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Committee’s report on the post office closure programme earlier this month.” Kent Labour Shadow Cabinet Member for Regeneration Roger Truelove said: “KCC has also recently announced it is involved with developing a ‘rescue plan’ for shops in areas affected by post office closures. “Labour MP Derek Wyatt brought up the issue of franchising post offices locally in his response to the Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Committee’s inquiry. But KCC missed the chance to pursue this issue with the Committee. “KCC getting involved with this Post Office Summit is too little, too late. It smacks of political posturing”. Note to EditorsThe Kent Post Office Summit is to be held on Thursday 6 March 2008.
