Kent Labour MP’s
A RUBBISH RECORD ON THE ENVIRONMENT

Kent Labour has slated the current Conservative leadership of KCC for its poor record on environmental issues.

According to the Audit Commission’s recent Corporate Assessment of the County Council, KCC and its co-members of the Kent Waste Partnership – including the Conservative-led district and borough councils – have been slow in developing effective and well-integrated local rubbish collection schemes.

Recycling rates across the county are getting better, but they remain low compared with other parts of the country. Districts and boroughs continue to have differences of practice and performance across the county.

Although Kent’s waste levels have recently levelled off after a long period of increase, they are still above average compared to other counties.

Kent Labour’s Shadow Cabinet member for the Environment Ray Parker said: “Apparently, Kent Waste Partnership is drafting up a new action plan and memorandum of understanding, but it’s still too early to say how effective they may be.

“We really should be past this stage by now. We should be taking action on waste, not just planning to take action”.

Kent’s progress on protecting and enhancing the environment is mixed, with some indicators of biodiversity deteriorating, and air pollution off-target.

Ray Parker concluded: “I hope, for the sake of the County’s environment, that Paul Carter and his Conservatives are given the boot at next year’s County Council elections.

“Will the people of Kent vote for a change of leadership at County Hall? Now that really would be a breath of fresh air”.
